The donation will help improve the living conditions of the elderly people in three villages in the Stara Zagora region and will assist in providing treatment to children suffering from cerebral palsy.

This is the second donation Enel Cuore makes in Bulgaria.

Stara Zagora, 16 December 2009 - Today, Enel Cuore, the non-profit organization established by Italian energy company Enel, announced a EUR 58,000 donation to the Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation (BCAF). The amount will be allocated for the realization of two projects, organized by BCAF. The news was announced by John Clark, Enel Manager for Bulgaria and CEO of Enel Maritza East 3, in the presence of Mariana Krasteva - Chief Secretary of the Stara Zagora Regional Administration, representatives of the local authorities in the municipality of Galabovo, including the Mayors of the villages of Mednikarovo, Obruchishte and Iskritsa, Lyudmila Atanasova, Programmes Director for the BCAF, Dr. Ivan Chavdarov, Manager of the Specialized Hospital for the Rehabilitation of Children with Cerebral Palsy, Violeta Nanevska - Head of the Social Support Agency, Polina Bozhilova - mother of the 4-year-old Bozhidar who suffers from cerebral palsy, etc.”A year ago we started working on several projects. Today, thanks to Enel Cuore we were able to realize two of them”, Lyudmila Atanasova from BCAF said.

The first project is addressing the elderly inhabitants of the villages of Iskritsa, Mednikarovo and Obruchishte in the municipality of Galabovo. Its aim is to make the local elderly people more active by involving their spare time in activities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Among the project activities is the improvement of the rural environment, renovation works, providing basic and additional equipment for the local community centers and pensioners’ clubs.

The second project is to support children suffering from cerebral palsy, who need constant treatment. In the first half of 2009 BCAF announced two recruitment sessions so that children could receive additional treatment and rehabilitation procedures (not financed by the Bulgarian National Health Insurance Fund). Thirty children were selected according to medical criteria and family income. With the help of Enel Cuore up to three series of procedures in the St. Sofia Specialized Hospital for Rehabilitation of Children with Cerebral Palsy will be provided.

John Clark commented: “As a good corporate citizen, we support local communities by improving the standards of living in the areas around our power plant. The holiday season is approaching and I think this donation represents a nice Christmas present from Enel Cuore”
This is the second donation, which Enel Cuore makes in Bulgaria. In 2006 the organization supported the Galabovo Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment by purchasing instruments and equipment for surgical laparoscopy and CAT scans worth some EUR 125,000.
Enel Cuore is a non-profit organisation established by Enel in 2003 to give concrete and targeted support to disadvantaged people, alongside organizations that are directly involved with particularly needful and urgent social problems.
Since 2003, Enel Cuore has donated almost 29 million euros and developed 276 projects, of which 236 in Italy and 40 abroad.

The company presented the Safety Line - one of the numerous initiatives within the International Safety Week organized in all plants of the Enel Group around the world

Mednikarovo, December 3, 2009. John Clark, CEO of Enel Maritza East 3 and Enel’s Manager for Bulgaria, and Quinto Di Ferdinando, CEO of Enel Operations Bulgaria and Enel Maritza East 3 TPP Plant Director, painted today the Safety Line at the entrance of the power plant. This was one of the numerous initiatives organized at the Enel Maritza East 3 TPP within the International Safety Week from November 30th to December 6th, 2009.”The Safety Line is another symbol of Enel’s commitment to promote a culture of safety among its employees and contractors employees worldwide”, John Clark said. “The line indicates the border beyond which everybody is obliged to wear its personal protective equipment in order to prevent potential workplace injuries. Thanks to such initiatives, Enel is following its ambitious objective for zero accidents.”

Safety walks, training evacuations and fire drills, seminars and films, initiatives involving contractors and local schools all aimed at raising safety awareness and improving the observation of the safety rules both in the work process and afterwards.

The International Safety Week is an initiative of the Enel Group devoted to the safety issue which was first held in 2008. Its second edition involved the Group’s 85,000 employees in the 24 countries where it operates.
Enel Maritza East 3 is 73% owned by Enel, Italy’s largest power company and Europe’s second listed utility by installed capacity. The company is the owner of the first lignite power plant in the Balkans fully compliant with the EU environmental standards.

The power plant produced 21,168.4 MWh for the first time in its history

The record performance comes as a result from the now completed power plant rehabilitation and the implementation of the Company’s operational excellence initiatives

Mednikarovo, October 30, 2009 - Enel Maritza East 3 TPP broke its record for power production for the first time in its history on October 24th, 2009. The generated energy was 21,168.4 MWh during the day. The plant was working as usual with more than 94% reduction of the SO2 emissions due to its flue gas desulphurization units. On the day of the record, all four units of the power plant were operational. Three of the units reached their full load of 227 MW each while the Bulgarian Central Dispatch loaded the fourth one up to 217 MW leaving room for even higher records in the future.

The historical event is a result of a combination of several factors. Among these are the successfully completed rehabilitation and modernization of Enel Maritza East 3 TPP and the implementation of the Zenith project for operational excellence. In addition, its staff is capable of reacting rapidly should energy demand in the country increase. This record demonstrates that Enel Maritza East 3 TPP is a reliable power producer with increased power availability.

John Clark, country manager for Enel in Bulgaria, commented: “The record we marked on that day is of great importance to us, because it is a clear result of our constant efforts to make Enel Maritza East 3 TPP the best power plant in terms of operation and environment in the country. It is evident and greatly appreciated that every employee of Enel in Bulgaria has contributed to this achievement.”

Enel Maritza East 3 is 73% owned by Enel, Italy’s largest power company and Europe’s second listed utility by installed capacity. The company is the owner of the first lignite power plant on the Balkans fully compliant with the EU environmental standards.

Zenith is an operational excellence project which has been implemented in Bulgaria since 2007. Its philosophy is to promote and foster continuous improvement and efficiency projects at the sites operated by Enel all over the world.

Ecological organizations supported by the company built a release cage for adaptation of the Griffon vulture - a species threatened with extinction in Bulgaria

Due to this project, thirty Griffon vultures are expected to be introduced in the Central Balkan within the following five years

Manolovo, October 21, 2009. The Birds of Prey Protection Society and partnering organizations celebrated today the completion of the most significant stage of their project for Griffon vulture reintroduction in the Balkan Mountains - the construction of a release cage used as accommodation facility for the vultures to mature and connect with the reintroduction site. The cage was installed near the village of Manolovo, in the Municipality of Pavel Bania, and the first two vultures brought from Spain were accommodated there. This project for the construction of the release cage is the first biodiversity project supported by Enel in Bulgaria and was mainly funded by the company. As early as 1998, Enel instituted its Biodiversity and Sustainable Development program with the objective to increase awareness of biodiversity and its conservation by investigating the interactions between energy and ecosystems. Since then Enel has cooperated with environmental organizations to strengthen biodiversity in the areas around its power plants.

The cage was opened in the presence of the Stara Zagora Regional Governor, Yordan Nikolov, representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Water, the Mayor of Pavel Bania,…, the Mayors of the villages of Tuzha and Manolovo, ….., the Head of the Central Balkan National Park, Mrs. Nela Rachevitz, etc.

The bird cage is a facility of great significance for the implementation of the project for helping the Griffon vulture return to the Central Balkan National Park. It was constructed by the Birds of Prey Protection Society and partnering green foundations near the village of Manolovo in August and September 2009. The cage is 20 m long, 10 m wide, and 4 m high. It is surrounded by a fence aimed at preventing predators from accessing the cage. The first two vultures were accommodated in it. A new group of 5 more birds is expected to arrive in the area by year-end. The total number of birds expected to be introduced in the Central Balkan within the following five years will be around 30.

Enel Maritza East 3 is 73% owned by Enel, Italy’s largest power company and Europe’s second listed utility by installed capacity. The company is the owner of the first fully compliant with EU environmental standards lignite power plant on the Balkans.

The participants in the competition were assessed by a national selection committee which included distinguished public and energy figures: Ms Svetlana Lomeva, Deputy Minister of Education, Youth and Science, Stefano Benazzo, Italy’s Ambassador in Bulgaria, Professor Dr. Eng. Tzancho Tzanev, Deputy Chairman of the Association of Energy Engineers-Bulgaria, Gabriele Bogo, project manager and representative of the Italian NGO “La Fabbrica” - Enel’s partner in the project, Nikolay Minkov, founder of the Energy and Utilities Committee at CEIBG together with John Clark, Enel’s Manager for Bulgaria.

Within the project more than 400 Bulgarian students visited the Enel Maritza East 3 TPP which celebrated the completion of its rehabilitation and modernization programme in May this year.

Enel is Italy’s largest power company, and Europe’s second listed utility by installed capacity. In Bulgaria it is majority shareholder of the newly rehabilitated and modernized Enel Maritza East 3 TPP - the first and only lignite power plant in the Balkans operating in full compliance with all EU environmental norms.
